Reed relays are electromechanical switches which use an electrical coil to actuate a magnetic force at the contact points. This type of relay can be found in numerous applications such as telecommunications, chronographs, large computers, and industrial settings. This type of relay has been used since the 1950s and has been popular ever since.
When an electric voltage is applied to the reed relay\'s coils, the internal electromagnet will attract a ferromagnetic armature which lies close to the contact points of the relay. The size of the contact gap, along with the magnetic force applied to the armature determines the amount of force which can be applied. This force is then transferred to the contact points, allowing the relay to open or close.
Reed relays are extremely reliable and can perform at high speeds. They possess a much higher contact current rating than other types of relays and can actuate even at low current levels. This makes them a viable option for a variety of applications where low current is required such as telecommunication and data transfer. Additionally, the typically small size of reed relays allows them to be used in tight spaces.
One disadvantage of reed relays is the fact that they require constant voltage to remain closed. If the current level drops or the voltage is interrupted, the relay will revert back to its default state. For applications which require increased safety or longer life, such as in automotive systems, extra precautionary measures may need to be taken. Additionally, the magnetic force, however small it may be, can disrupt other electrical components nearby.
Reed relays are widely used across various industries due to their fast response, small size, and reliable nature. They are most commonly used in switching applications like a toggle switch or in systems which require low current levels such as those found in telecommunications. Their ability to actuate quickly and efficiently make them the perfect choice for applications that require a reliable switch.
