TVS – Varistors, MOVs
Varistors, also known as transient voltage suppression (TVS) devices, are two-terminal nonlinear integrated circuits designed to protect vulnerable circuits from electrical transients. A type of voltage dependent resistor, they are widely used in consumer electronics, telecommunications, automotive, and aerospace industries. TVS devices, such as the 82542140, are designed to reduce the damaging effects of high voltage transients caused by lightning strikes, electrostatic discharges, power line faults, and more.
At its core, TVS technology utilizes a phenomenon known as ‘ avalanche breakdown’, which occurs when a reverse voltage is applied to a p-n junction diode in the device. The maximum breakover voltage of the 82542140 is 125V, with an operating range from 5 to 40mA. It offers low leakage over a wide temperature range, with a maximum leakage of 0.1mA at 25°C and 0.2mA at 125°C. It also offers a clamping voltage of 18V working under 400A 5/60µs pulse current. Additionally, the 82542140 provides fast response times, with a breakover time of less than 45ns.

The 82542140 is constructed from a zinc oxide powder that has been compressed between two–sheet copper electrodes and sealed in a canister. The device responds within an ultra-fast 45ns and has inherently low contact resistance. Its protection circuit design has the capability to withstand multiple dual lightning, switching, and power line dips, as well as the most common ESD, EFT, and surge pulses. Its multi-voltage technology eliminates the need to select a specific part for a specific voltage application.
In addition to its protection capabilities, the 82542140’s capability to work within a wide temperature range of -40°C to +85°C offers excellent reliability and design flexibility in the harsh industrial and automotive environments.
