The 8259 programmable interval timer (PIT) chip is a standard peripheral integrated circuit used in IBM-compatible computers that manages all of the timing-related functions in a computer system. Working Principle of 8259
The 8259 chip works by counting clock pulses, which are produced at a constant rate and independently of the operating system. Each time the counter reaches the predetermined value, a signal is generated and given to the processor. The processor then interprets this “interrupt” signal as a request for service.
The interrupt signal is read by the processor and the processor responds by suspending the currently executing process and jumping to the location holding the code for servicing the interrupt. After the servicing is complete, the processor resumes the process where it left off.
The 8259 chip\'s ability to generate interrupt signals asynchronously from the processor enables multitasking. In fact, this is the foundation for all multitasking operating systems.
