Snap Action, Limit Switches

Snap action switch is also known as microswitch, which is mostly used in mechanical operations – to detect the position or condition of some mechanical components. A snap action switch consists of a spring loaded actuator, which moves along a predetermined path to mechanically open or close an electrical circuit. When a machine part moves beyond the predetermined switch location, the actuator is moved along its predetermined path and the electrical contacts are opened or closed.

A typical example of a limit switch is a traditional doorbell system, where the pressure of pushing a button causes a spring loaded actuator to move, closing a microswitch to turn on the bell.

Another common application for snap action switches is as overload protection for motors. Electrical circuits are often used to monitor the voltage or current of electric motors to prevent them from operating beyond their rated capacity. When that voltage or current is exceeded, the switch is triggered to disconnect the motor from the power source.

This is the vital component of the switch which allows it to be used in a variety of applications. For example, in a medical imaging machine, the machine could be programmed to generate images only when a force greater than a predetermined amount is detected, such as when a patient is lying down. This sensitivity adjustment can also help to prevent false triggering of the switch if it is used in a mechanical environment.
