Aluminum - polymer capacitors, or simply "Al-polymer capacitors" is a type of electrochemical energy storage device composed of an anode and a solid polymer dielectric. Unlike conventional aluminum electrolytic capacitors, which are composed of two metalized electrodes, the electrochemical device of an Al-polymer capacitor is constructed of a specially configured structure, including a highly conductive aluminum substrate, a chemically treated film, and a semi-conductive ceramic layer. As a result of their unique construction, Al-polymer capacitors offer superior electrical characteristics, low ESR, excellent stability, and superior capacitance range compared to conventional aluminum electrolytic capacitors.

This electrolyte facilitates charge transfer, leading to an electrochemical reaction that generates energy in the form of electrical current.The structure of an Al-polymer capacitor is simple and compact, consisting of a highly conductive aluminum substrate, chemically treated film and a semi-conductive ceramic layer. The aluminum substrate provides a low resistance path for charge transfer and its surface has been etched to provide a high degree of adhesion between the substrate and the film. The film is composed of a single or multiple layers of a specially formulated polymer material with a high dielectric strength that allows for the formation of the electrochemical double layer capacitance. The semi-conductive ceramic layer provides dissipation of any excess charge.The main advantage of Al-polymer capacitors is that their performance characteristics do not depend on temperature, humidity, frequency of operation, or the applied voltage. This makes them ideal for use in applications where these parameters may vary greatly. Furthermore, the relatively low ESR values of Al-polymer capacitors allow them to be used in high-frequency switching applications, where conventional aluminum electrolytic capacitors are not able to tolerate the changing current level without significant voltage drop. This is highlighted in the figure below, where the ESR graph of a conventional capacitor shows the capacitor’s drop in voltage value when subjected to frequent switching conditions.
