RFI and EMI - Contacts, Fingerstock and Gaskets
The 8864-0100-72 is an innovative contact element produced by a reliable manufacturer, designed to reduce Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) and Electro Magnetic Interference (EMI) between two electrically associated systems. It features an efficient working principle which applies to many industrial applications requiring contacts to join two electrical systems at all times, while minimizing the transfer of undesirable EMI/RFI frequencies.
The contact element itself consists of a one-piece stainless steel fingerstock unit and a pre-shaped contact gasket, both produced from long-lasting, highly corrosion resistant stainless steel. The fingerstock housing comprises of two halves, joined with fastening features, forming a ‘U’ shape channel into which the contact gasket is placed. The contact gasket is pre-shaped with ‘U’ shaped grip elements in each end, located to fit perfectly into the fingerstock housing; this design ensures a secure connection is maintained, even under pressure and vibration, and importantly, it prevents the contact element from being mistakenly displaced during maintenance operations.
Furthermore, the contact element features an anti-rotational design, allowing the operator to rest assured that during normal operation the contact element remains securely fastened between the two electrical components. This ensures a reliable connection and ensures the contact element delivers the high EMI/RFI performance out-put required for different industrial applications.
The fingerstock unit assembly and contact gasket is brought together to form the contact element. Stainless steel contact straps and ‘U’ shaped insulators are fastened one to each side of the housing. The contact straps provide mechanical robustness to the contact element and ultimately ensured the utmost safety and maintain connection integrity during system operations. The ‘U’ shape insulators increase surface resistance to electrical flow; both the contact straps and ‘U’ shaped insulators work together to minimize the amount of impedance generated when the contact element is connected to a system.
Aside from minimizing the amount of impedance generated, the fingerstock contact element is designed to reduce both RFI and EMI within systems. The contact element features a resilient contact between the two systems which includes a combination of metallic contact plates and lip seals, providing superior EMI/RFI noise suppression. The contact plates are designed to ensure the two contacts remain in metal-to-metal contact, even under extreme temperature variances and during rapid changes in contact position.
In addition, the contact element features a dielectric column plug and lip seal underneath the contact plates. This is designed to improve EMI/RFI performance, with the plug working to maintain a constant distance between the two contacts while the lip seal prevents any kind of electrical interference from entering the contact assembly.
