Fuses

Fuses provide protection from electrical overloads and short circuits. They act like a circuit breaker, but instead of tripping the power to the circuit, they open the circuit allowing the current to pass through and in the process, dissipate the excess energy created from the overload or short circuit. Fuses are relatively reliable and cost-effective on many electrical circuits.

89096-010 Application Field and Working Principle

The 89096-010 is a 270VAC (Volts Alternating Current) and 300VDC (Volts Direct Current) time-delay fuse designed for service entrance equipment and panelboards, switchboards, and similar devices. This fuse is also designed for motor circuits (up to 700 amperes) and for branch circuits. It has a dual element that provides short-circuit protection as well as overload protection. For short-circuit protection, the current through the fuse must exceed the interrupting rating for the device. The current rating is measured in amperes (amps). Overload protection occurs when the current beyond a certain value for a prolonged period of time.

The 89096-010 operates based on the temperature of the wire. It has a thermal-magnetic element that works by detecting the heat of the wire. When the temperature of the wire rises due to too much current flowing through it, the thermal-magnetic element will detect the increase in temperature and will open the circuit. This will allow the excess energy to dissipate and prevent the circuit from becoming overloaded.

This fuse also has a time-delay feature. This feature ensures that the fuse will allow a certain amount of current to pass for a certain amount of time before it opens the circuit. This feature helps prevent false tripping if a brief surge of current passes through the circuit.

The 89096-010 fuse is UL (Underwriters Laboratories) and CSA (Canadian Standard Association) listed and meets the requirements of the National Electrical Code. It is also compliant with the requirements of the RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive).
