Reed relays are one of the most commonly used components in many electronic circuits. A reed relay is a type of relay that uses a reed switch and an electromagnet to switch an electrical circuit. Working Principle
A reed relay consists of a reed switch, an enclosed coil of wire, and other parts. The reed switch is typically a glass tube, closed at one end, with two thin strips of metal, known as reeds, stretched across the tube. The reed switch is sealed in a vacuum or inert gas to prevent corrosion. A permanent magnet is placed near one end of the tube, which attracts one reed towards it. The other reed is connected to an external contact, such as the input of a circuit.
When a small electric current is passed through the wire, it creates an electromagnetic field which attracts the second reed towards it. This brings the two reeds into contact, which in turn enables the currents to flow through the external contact. When the current is removed, the two reeds return to their original position, and the current is stopped.
Reed relays are widely used as they are mechanically simple, and generally offer a robust construction, low operating power, and versatility. Furthermore, they are typically very reliable and require little maintenance. As a result, they are still incredibly popular in many industrial and commercial applications.
