Toggle Switches

A18JH are toggle switches used for various electrical applications. They are very popular in industrial, commercial and aviation systems due to their low cost, reliable operation, and small form factor. The main components of a toggle switch include a mechanical actuator, such as a lever, that creates the switching action; the contacts that complete or interrupt the circuit; and the housing.

Operation

Toggle switches are generally single pole, double throw (SPDT) switches. This means that two contacts are available on each toggle switch which allows two separate circuits to be switched independently. There are two types of SPDT switches, momentary and maintained. A momentary switch is only active while the switch is being pressed down. A maintained switch remains in the selected position even when the switch is released.

Working Principle

The working principle of an A18JH switch is fairly simple. It involves the actuation of a selector arm which is linked to spring-loaded contacts inside the switch. When the selector arm is moved to a desired position, it causes the contacts to either close or open, depending on the desired function of the switch. This then allows the electrical current to flow through or be interrupted accordingly depending on the position of the selector arm.
