The A3931KJP-T is a 3-A integrated motor driver designed to drive valuable DC motors with a supply voltage range of 4V to 40V and is capable of driving currents up to 3.5A. It was designed to control the operation of DC motors used in toy, robot and industrial applications of small and medium size.

The A3931KJP-T supports various control techniques, such as to-charge, to-click, PWM, and constant current control. The device includes two slaon-off stages, two open-drain drive outputs and two PWM inputs. It also includes two bias pins: a program voltage input pin and a current threshold pin, in order to support large range of motor applications. The A3931KJP-T integrates a charge pump for driving an external N-channel FET and a motor stall detector. Separate diagnostic inputs provide current and stall detection.

The A3931KJP-T has two operational modes, single (torque) mode and dual (speed) mode. In single mode, the motor torque is controlled in proportion to the voltage applied to the program voltage pin and the current threshold pin. In dual mode, the speed of the motor is controlled by the ratio of the PWM channel A frequency to the PWM channel B frequency. The A3931KJP-T can also be used to drive two motors in series or in parallel by controlling either the PWM waveforms or by controlling the connected FETs. The A3931KJP-T also includes a thermal protection circuit and an over current protection circuit to further protect the device.

When applying the A3931KJP-T for motor control applications, the external components required include a power FET, capacitor, current sense resistor and voltage divider. The power FET must be able to withstand the voltage across it and should be rated to handle the motor current. The capacitor should be selected to minimize switching noise and minimize EMI. The current sense resistor should be able to handle the motor current and its value should depend on the desired current threshold. The voltage divider should be selected to equal the programmed current threshold.
