The A5974AD is a monolithic integrated DC-DC STEP-DOWN regulator made with advanced high voltage bipolar process. It is designed for portable applications and for distributed power systems requiring various voltages. It features high accuracy, fast transient response, and high efficiency. It is housed in a small space-saving TO-220 type package.

The device features a high performance PWM controller with fine duty cycle resolution, allowing good regulation performance and low noise. The A5974AD also features high current capability, low start-up and operating current, over-voltage protection, and underbody current sensing. Working Principle

The A5974AD is designed for a step-down (buck) topology. It contains a voltage regulator, feedback loop, and power stage. The input voltage is applied to the voltage regulator, which sets the current through the feedback loop. The output of the feedback loop acts as the reference voltage for the power stage.The power stage is composed of an internal high side power MOSFET switch and a low side power MOSFET. When the high side MOSFET switch is turned on, current flows into the power output capacitor, charging it up to the reference voltage. When the high side switch is turned off, current will flow out of the capacitor to the output. The power stage switching is controlled by a current mode PWM control loop.
