Introduction
A8503EECTR-T is a PMIC (power management integrated circuit) – LED driver, which is one of the importance products of Dialog Corporation. Working Principle
The basic architecture of a switching regulator is shown in the block diagram. An input voltage (Vin ) is connected to the power stage. The power stage includes a power switch, a rectifier for conducting current in only one direction and inductor for storing energy. The output voltage is determined by the electrical components connected in the power stage. The regulation of the output voltage is done by forming an output voltage feedback loop. This feedback loop is composed of an error amplifier, current sensing and over-voltage protection of output voltage.
The power switch (usually a FET transistor) is turned on under the control of the oscillator to supply current to the load through the rectifier and inductor. This inductor stores energy when the power switch is in the ON-state and it releases energy for the load during the OFF-state. An internal control circuit is used to adjust the frequency of the oscillator and to control the on/off duty cycle of the power switch. When the current sensor senses a change in current, it sends a signal back to the control circuit to adjust the frequency of the oscillator, resulting in a change in the on/off duty cycle and, thus, controlling the output voltage.
In addition to its primary role in providing power for the loads, the switching DC-DC converter also has several other functions, such as UVLO detection, overvoltage protection, overcurrent protection, short-circuit protection and thermal protection.
