Optoisolators - Logic Output is a common type of opto-isolator which is used in a wide variety of applications for electrical isolation and signal transmission. The ACPL-074L-500E is a 4-channel opto-isolator IC from the Avago Technologies series, that offers two options for logic output – both with a low power consumption and wide operating temperature range. The ACPL-074L-500E is a single-package solution which combines the features of the previous series ACPL-074L-500H and the ACPL-074L-500L. It is mainly used in industrial and automotive applications for electrical isolation of inputs and outputs.

The ACPL-074L-500E has two control pins for each channel – one to activate and the other to deactivate. When the first pin is high then the logic output goes high, when the second pin is low then the logic output goes low. It features a propagation delay of 40 ns, a permissible common-mode transient peak voltage of +50V for electromechanical relays and switches, a operating voltage range of 3.15-5.25V, and a maximum current consumption of 250 nA. Additionally, the ACPL-074L-500E offers over-temperature protection, short-circuit protection, and integrated ESD protection.

The ACPL-074L-500E can be divided into four independent channels. Each channel has two transparent slots at the sides of the module, allowing for an easy connection of a LED, a transistor, or an LED/transistor pair. Each channel can either be configured for a TTL (transistor–transistor logic) output or a CMOS (complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor) output. When configured for TTL output, the ACPL-074L-500E can drive up to 25mA of current, providing a high voltage level of up to 3.15V at the output. When configured for CMOS output, the module can drive up to 12mA of current and provide a low voltage level of up to 0V.

The ACPL-074L-500E has been designed to offer a better solution than its predecessors by providing a lower power consumption and wider operating temperature range. It also features a higher isolation voltage of up to 500V for applications in high-voltage environments, and a wide frequency range of up to 1 MHz.
