Isolators are devices that allow signals to be transmitted from a sender to a receiver, without having them interfere with each other and without distorting the signal. This is accomplished through means of isolation, either electrically or optically. Isolators are often used in applications where signals need to be detected or transmitted over long distances with minimal noise, for example in communication systems, industrial automation, medical applications or automotive applications.The ACPL-5161-300 is an isolation device that combines the features of a gate driver and an isolator in one package. The device operates as a galvanic isolator, isolating two digital circuits from each other with high speed data rates across a wide operating temperature range.The ACPL-5161-300 optimizes electrical noise immunity and strong common-mode noise suppression. This isolator has its own voltage regulator, which eliminates potential communication errors resulting from power supply fluctuations. The output current is set to sink pull-up, pull-down or ac-coupled control. The ACPL-5161-300 also features low propagation delay, adjustable dead-time and adjustable signal skewing. The ACPL-5161-300 is ideal for interfacing between any digital circuits or ASICs with different power supply voltages and for suppressing and isolating digital data and signal circuits in harsh industrial environments and is particularly suited for applications such as motor control and switches, motion control, data acquisition, telecommunications, industrial automation, factory automation and consumer products.The ACPL-5161-300 can be used for both unidirectional and bidirectional data transmission, allowing bi-directional and full-duplex communication. Its low voltage on-state output impedance reduces ringing on the output side. Additionally, the ACPL-5161-300 offers UVLO protection to guard against push-pull rattle.The operation of the ACPL-5161-300 is based on a two-pole, optically coupled isolator structure which provides isolation between a driver side and a receiver side with an insulation rating of 609Vrms. The driver side is powered by an additional VCC supply pin, which allows the driver side voltage to be adjusted independently from the receiver side and allows for a current level adjustment. The device also allows a dead-time between the two signals to be set via a dedicated pin.The ACPL-5161-300 also offers a built-in TUV optically-coupled isolation device. This device isolates the input pins from the output pins and also reduces the propagation delay and jitter on the output signal. The TUV isolator is LED type, allowing for a low supply voltage of 2.2V, with a rise and fall time of 8μs.Overall, the ACPL-5161-300 is an highly reliable, high speed integrated circuit in the same package that provides a galvanic isolation between different electronic circuits with bidirectional data transfer capabilities. This isolation device is suitable for use in harsh industrial environments, with its fan-out of 4, and can also be used to protect against ESD on the input side. The ACPL-5161-300 is an example of a gate driver and isolator in one package, with excellent electrical noise immunity and common-mode noise suppression.
