Optoisolators are optoelectronic devices that provide electrical insulation between input and output of the isolator. The ACPL-M61L-560E is considered one of these optoisolators, constituted by a logic output module, and it is employed in order to supress voltage transients, as well as to ensure safety system operation.
The most common application of the ACPL-M61L-560E is a power surge protector in industrial and automotive applications. The design of the ACPL-M61L-560E consists of two sides: the input side and the output side. The module contains an LED as an input element, and a phototransistor as an output element. The LED is fed by a voltage that can go up to 90V and the output device is sensitive to a current that could reach up to 40mA. There is also a voltage drop of 3V in the optoisolator, in order to trigger the output element.
Since the LED can\'t be turned off, the input side of this isolator uses an NPN transistor to control it. The LED is connected between ground and the emitter of this transistor, and when the voltage in the base of the transistor goes over a certain threshold, the LED gets turned ON.
The output side, which is the phototransistor, is placed in the proximity of the LED, facing the emitter. The phototransistor is an NPN bipolar transistor, which means that it is has a base, an emitter and a collector. The collector and the base are connected together, forming the output circuit, and the LED and the emitter are connected in parallel. When the LED is turned on, it generates light, which charges the base and collector of the phototransistor and produces a current in the output circuit.
