Data acquisition - Digital potentiometers refer to digitally programmable resistors that are electrically variable. They allow for electronic control of the resistance of the system without having to adjust mechanically rotating wiper arms. One such device is the AD5170BRM2.5-RL7. This device is a single-channel 256-position linear-taper digital potentiometer that features a driver circuit, eliminating the need for external components. The device has a resistor element consisting of two segmented, non-volatile memory cells, allowing memory retention and operation down to 1.7V. First, an input voltage is applied to the A and B pins. At this point, the voltage will be received by the comparators, which then output a logic signal that is sent to the output latch. Then, depending on the input signal, the internal resistance ladder will be set to different dimensions depending on the number of inputs given. The variable resistance will interact with the external network by which the signal can be processed. Finally, the resistance can be adjusted by latching the number of inputs given, thus increasing or decreasing the resistance value. Furthermore, this device can be adjusted through a three-wire serial digitaled SPI interface. It consists of a serial clock (SCK), data input (SDI) and data output (SDO) signals. The SDI signal is used to load the wiper register with 8-bit data that is sent in pairs to the two 8-wiper registers. The SDO signal provides the data of the last 8 bits or 16 bits written to the potentiometer for address input or reset recognition; and the SCK signal functions as the shift clock for SDI and SDO. Although AD5170BRM2.5-RL7 is the single-channel version, other versions exist that can provide multiple channels of resistive elements, such as the AD5145BRMZ-RL7. This device consists of two 40-position linear-taper digital potentiometers, derived from the same resistive elements, which after the two elements are arrayed together provide a total of 80 positions. Thus, each of the two potentiometers can be individually adjusted to its own position for application purposes. The size of the wiper resistance is also improved to a lower value range from 10Ω to 100Ω, thus providing a more precise resistor variation.In conclusion, the AD5170BRM2.5-RL7 device is one of the many digital potentiometers available in the market today.
