AD5317BRU-REEL Data Acquisition - Digital to Analog Converters (DAC)The AD5317BRU-REEL is a Digital to Analog Converter (DAC) for data acquisition applications, based on the 13-bit Analog Devices AD5317 low power DAC. It is available in a tiny 8-lead SOIC package and operates from a single +3.3 V supply. The output range is 0 V to +3.3 V analog output scaler and provides an accuracy of 16 bits.It is a circuit that converts digital information (i.e., electrical signals of binary or multibit words) into a continuous analog signal. Such digital-to-analog (D/A) converters are used in practically every area of signal-processing instrumentation. It needs to convert the digital information into an analog signal so that the signal can be amplified, filtered, and otherwise further processed by analog devices. This data acquisition device is well suited for applications involving communications, analog signal processing, audio, and automotive systems.The conversion takes place in two stages, a coding stage and a digital-to-analog conversion stage. In the coding stage, the digital information is coded by the D/A converter by using one of the many coding techniques such as pulse-code modulation (PCM), binary-weighted resistors, log encoding, or table lookup. The input signal is then digitized to produce a binary word which is sent to the digital-to-analog conversion stage. The AD5317Digital to Analog Converter (DAC) achieves its accuracy by way of a comparator-based architecture. The comparator compares the input with a reference voltage and switches the output when the two signals are equal. An integrated reference voltage is used for the conversion process and is appropriately conditioned to produce an accurate voltage. This reference voltage is then compared with the digital information and the resulting output is a digital-to-analog conversion. As the digital-to-analog conversion process is repeated every 12.5 µs, the accuracy of the AD5317BRU-REEL is maintained by using an averaging filter to flatten the error response.As the AD5317BRU-REEL has a full, 13-bit resolution, it can handle very low, as well as very high, input signals. It is THD-optimized and allows for a wide range of applications. The AD5317BRU-REEL can also be configured to be used in continuous or single-shot conversion modes. The resolution and linearity of the DAC can be set via internal registers allowing it to accommodate a wide range of resolutions and accuracies. The AD5317BRU-REEL is designed to operate in harsh environments and is suitable for a wide range of applications, including automotive, medical, industrial, scientific, communication and consumer electronics. It is even capable of producing a high resolution analog output in response to low frequency or slow changing digital signals. This is achieved by the use of integrated high-accuracy digital filters and an averaging technique, which can smooth out variation on the output and reduce the THD.The AD5317BRU-REEL is an ideal choice for applications with stringent power requirement and performance. It has very low power consumption with a low standby current of 1 µA and output current of 85 μA/channel. It also has a very low phase-delay error of less than 0.7° at 1 MHz and a wide output voltage range of up to 8V.
