AD5381BSTZ-3-REEL belongs to the family of digital to analog converters (DAC) used in the field of data acquisition. It is a typical current output type device that works in the principle of pulse width modulation (PWM). That is, the output voltage of the device is determined by the size and frequency of the pulses passing through an output filter. This filtering is done through the use of an on-chip passive low pass filter connected to the PWM module.

Of the four control signals provided to the device: Reset, sync, latch and clock, the clock signal is the most important one. This clock signal which oscillates at certain frequency determines the PWM switching frequency and the output voltage of the converter. By adjusting the clock frequency, one can modify the level of output voltage of this device.

The way this device operates is by controlling the current flowing through the output filter just like what is done in the Gamma Delta (ΔΓ) modulation. In other words, after comparing the digital input value to a master clock, the device switches between two possible values and thus producing a PWM pulse train.

Interestingly, this device uses two types of buck converters for its power supply and the reference voltage for its internal gain stage. The buck converters are used to generate appropriate voltages for the input and reference module, while the reference voltage is used to determine the minimum and maximum allowable voltages for the output stage.
