The AD558JPZ is a complete 8-bit successive approximation analog-to-digital converter featuring fast conversion and multiple output types. It is designed to sample and convert signals ranging from 0V to VCC (full scale). The AD558JPZ is well suited for a variety of precision data acquisition applications.
Functionality
The AD558JPZ is comprised of an 8-bit successive approximation register, a track-and-hold circuit and a voltage reference. The S/H circuit acquires the input sample and then holds its value during the conversion process. The successive approximation register (SAR) compares the S/H output voltage with the reference voltage and outputs an 8-bit digital word to the output latch. The latch then outputs the 8-bit word to the output pins of the device.
The AD558JPZ also features an internal reference voltage with a wide range of settings from 0V to VCC. A self-calibrated DAC circuit is used to generate the reference voltage allowing for a very fast settling time for the DAC. The reference is buffered through a buffer amplifier and then routed to the reference voltage pin of the AD558JPZ.

Working Principle
The AD558JPZ works by taking a voltage reference (generated from an internal DAC circuit), and then comparing it to an input signal. The S/H circuit acquires the input sample, the successive approximation register (SAR) compares the S/H output voltage with the reference voltage, and then an 8-bit digital word is outputted to the output latch.
The AD558JPZ can also be used for digital to analog conversion. For this application, a parallel 8-bit word is inputted to the register, and the voltage reference supplied to the reference voltage pin. The SAR compares these two voltages and the result is outputted to the output pins.
