Data Acquisition - Digital to Analog Converters (DAC) The AD7228ACR is a Digital to Analog Converter (DAC) designed for cost-sensitive application but without skimping on performance. The AD7228ACR eliminates the need for an expensive high resolution DAC by providing low-cost 12 to 14 bit resolution. The part also offers shutdown control to allow the user to save power during periods of inactivity.The AD7228ACR is suitable for applications such as industrial process control and instrumentation, automotive control, test and measurement, sensor stimulus, motion control, position and setpoint control, and audio applications.This device offers outstanding linearity, accuracy, and low-noise performance with a power-on reset feature and shutdown capability. The current output allows direct connection to a temperature controller, motor drive, and overall power savings. The chip-selectable power-down feature helps conserve energy and extends product life.The AD7228ACR provides a 12-bit and a 14-bit resolution in a 6-pin SOT-23 package. The part\'s open-drain output provides a programmed current through an external resistor to a voltage reference. Specifically, it consists of a multiplying 16-bit DAC, a scaling amplifier and an output buffer. The AD7228ACR provides a power-on reset feature to ensure that the output is reset to zero during power-up. It also features a chip-selectable shutdown feature that reduces the ICC power supply current to less than 1 µA.The AD7228ACR includes a high-speed, continuous serial port interface that can be accessed directly from a microprocessor. This interface allows the user to access the DACs internal registers. The register configuration allows the user to configure the operating characteristics, such as input interface type, serial data rate, resolution and shutdown control.The AD7228ACR is built around two 16-bit DACs, a scaling amplifier and an output buffer. The two DACs are configured in parallel and each DAC provides a 12-bit and a 14-bit resolution DAC. The output voltage range for the 12-bit DAC is 0 to VREF, while the output voltage range for the 14-bit DAC is 0 to 2VREF.In order to generate the required DAC output voltage, the AD7228ACR uses a multiplying DAC. The ADCN register contains 8-bits of data that gets blended to the input voltage. The AD7228ACR then multiplies the blended value with the DAC output voltage. This blending of the ADCN register data with the input voltage results in a linear DAC output voltage.The scaling amplifier provides the necessary voltage gain for the DAC output voltage. The gain of the scaling amplifier is controlled by the M(R) register. The M(R) register contains four bits of data and these bits determine the gain of the scaling amplifier. The output buffer provides the necessary buffering to the DAC output.The AD7228ACR also offers a power-on reset feature and a chip-selectable power-down feature. The power-on reset feature ensures that the ADC output is reset during power-up. The chip-selectable power-down feature reduces the ICC power supply current to less than 1µA.In conclusion, the AD7228ACR is an excellent choice for cost-sensitive applications.
