Data Acquisition involves the conversion of analog signals to digital data. The Analog to Digital Converters (ADC) play a vital role in not only collecting the signals but also in measuring, amplifying and storing them. One of the well-known ADC models is the AD7715AR-3.

The AD7715AR-3 is a high performance, low power, 16-bit analog-to-digital converter with active drive circuitry for direct connection to an external input voltage. It is designed for low noise, low distortion, and low power operations using a single +3.3 V supply. It is a complete monolithic IC down to the transistors and resistors, with a built-in voltage reference, Sigma-Delta modulator and Operational Amplifier. It is housed in a 24-pin plastic SOIC package. It has an on-chip voltage reference and three-stage analog filter, making it a fully integrated ADC in a single chip. The input range is unipolar and bipolar, with programmable gain control and differential digital outputs.

The working principle of the AD7715AR-3 is actually quite simple. It starts with sampling the external analog input voltage by the ADC, then converting it to digital values by the Sigma-Delta modulator and finally outputting it in digital format. The whole process happens in three stages. In the first stage, the analog voltage is sampled by the ADC and fed into the modulator. In the second stage, the modulator produces a series of digital pulses according to the input which are passed through a digital filter. The digital filter is responsible for rejecting unwanted noise and distortion. Finally, in the third stage, the ADC outputs the data in digital form by making use of a latch.
