Working Principle

The AD7891ASZ-1 works on a successive approximation register (SAR) principle. The device converts the incoming analog voltage into discrete digital code, which is then output as a parallel 16-bit digital code. The conversion is performed in two phases by the ADC. In the first phase, the reference voltage is compared with the incoming analog voltage and the decision is made whether to ‘Go Up’ or ‘Go Down’. The second phase is then conducted by the SAR where the reference is compared against the analog voltage again to determine the exact value of the fifth-bit digit. The next four bits are then determined in a successive manner, with each bit being compared and determined in the same manner.
