Direct Digital Synthesis, more widely known as DDS, is a precisely timed, data-driven algorithm, which generates the output waveform with the help of a phase accumulator, a frequency (phase) register and a Digital to Analogue Converter (DAC). The phase accumulator generates the desired waveform in the analog domain and is fed to the DAC, which converts the digital signal to an analogue signal.
One variant of DDS system that is widely used in various industrial, commercial as well as military applications is the AD9912ABCPZ. This Direct Digital Synthesis model has both digital and analogue stages integrated in its design. The digital part of the system monitors the frequency of the output, so as to ensure the desired output. The analogue component in the model supports the generation of a sine waveform with the use of a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO).
