The ADM3491ARZ is an integrated, low-power, differential line transceiver designed for RS-485 and RS-422 applications. It is designed to meet the requirements of lengthy transmission lines, typical in automotive, avionic, and industrial applications. The transceiver is capable of operating up to 5 Mbit/s while providing differential line driver and receiver pairs with enhanced performance. The device provides receiver fail-safe functionality, wide common-mode voltage range, and 600V ESD protection on the bus pins.

Working Principle

The ADM3491ARZ is a differential line transceiver, made to interface with TLV2551 and TLV2553 high-speed logic devices, or CMOS/LVTTL logic devices. It combines two driver circuits and two receivers that are electronically isolated from one another, thus allowing two-way data transfer.

The device input/outputs pins operate in differential mode and are opto-isolated from one another, which enables it to provide a large common-mode voltage range and signal robustness, allowing communication link robustness in noisy environments. The MAXIMADM3491ARZ also supports bidirectional data transfers, allowing communication in either directions. There is no direction control pin and the receiver always allows data transmission.

The ADM3491ARZ comes with a high-speed receiver input range of 5 Mbps and can achieve up to 1200 mbps data rate in RS-422/RS-485 application. Each driver has a separate enable pin (RDE and TDD) which help simultaneously put both outputs high when enabled. The receiver fail-safe functionality is enabled through RDE and TDD signals.

The receiver input port is intended for interfacing directly to the on-chip differential inputs of an application logic device. The output port is used to interface with the bus line and can be used to terminate or drive the bus lines.

The ADM3491ARZ features 600V ESD protection on all pins, and is capable of operating over an extended temperature range from -40°C to 125°C.
