Power management integrated circuits (PMICs) are highly integrated circuits optimized to manage the power requirements of the increasingly complex consumer and computing products. PMICs typically include voltage regulators, battery chargers, LED control and current monitoring. As a type of PMIC, Supervisors are designed to monitor single or multiple power rails and detect out of tolerance conditions, thus providing an extra level of protection to ensure product quality and reliability. The ADM709MARZ family of micro power supervisors is an example of successfully used Supervisors which have proven their effectiveness in various embedded applications.
The ADM709MARZ is a micro-power monitor that is specifically designed to monitor circuit power supplies and can provide additional protection for processors and other system components. It supports a wide operating temperature range from -40°C to +85°C, making it suitable for many applications such as automotive, consumer electronics, industrial and medical equipment. In addition, its wide voltage range (1.2V to 5.5V) and low quiescent current (4μA @ 5V) make it a perfect fit for use in a variety of embedded systems where power efficiency is critical.
The ADM709MARZ family of micro power supervisors incorporate several features to address the challenges of monitoring the system’s power supply. The device monitors one or more circuit power supplies and provides an active-low open drain RESET signal if any of them drops below the user-defined threshold levels. The reset signal is either active-low RESET or active-high RESET, enabling the supervisor to be used in both differential or single-ended voltage monitoring applications. The device is also able to detect overvoltage conditions, providing protection against potentially damaging overvoltage events.
In addition to the reset and overvoltage functions, the supervisor also includes an independent power-good (PG) output that indicates when the voltage supply has returned to within the accuracy range. The device also features a programmable timeout period, allowing the designer to define the amount of time that must pass before the device de-asserts the power-good output.
Furthermore, the supervisor is integrated with a low drop-out voltage regulator that powers the ADM709MARZ from the monitored rails, eliminating the need for an external power supply. The low drop-out voltage regulator also provides power to the rest of the circuitry within the device, including the clock that continuously monitors the voltage and monitors the RESET and PG outputs.
The ADM709MARZ is a versatile device that can be used in a variety of applications, including automotive, industrial, consumer, medical and communications equipment. In automotive applications, the device provides overvoltage protection to the power train and can monitor the vehicle’s main battery rail, providing an alert in the event of an overvoltage event.
