PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuits) provide an integrated solution for different power management requirement, such as the regulation of voltage, the backup of power source, the improvement of the reliability of the system and the conservation of energy. Specifically, PMIC Voltage Regulators, are electronic circuits which regulate the voltage of power sources.
Within the category of Voltage Regulators, there are three main types – Linear, Switched-Mode and Programmable. Linear Voltage Regulators are the most often-used type of regulator, due to their simplicity and low cost. As the name implies, Linear Voltage Regulators are linear devices, meaning that the output voltage is directly proportional to the input voltage.
One example of a linear voltage regulator is the ADM7172ACPZ-1.8-R7. This device is widely used in applications such as battery-operated systems, automotive electronic systems, cellular phones and PDA, portable media players and digital cameras. Interesting, it can even be used to replace older, otherwise tedious regulators for LED lighting solutions.
The ADM7172ACPZ-1.8-R7 is equipped with a built-in over-temperature protection circuit and current limit circuit. Moreover, it has a low-shunt-current capability, low-drop-out voltage and low quiescent current, making it one of the most efficient solutions available. The output voltage can be adjusted by two external resistors and it has an internal reference voltage of 1.2V, making it an easily adjustable device.
The ADM7172ACPZ-1.8-R7 employs the basic operating principle of a linear voltage regulator by comparing the output voltage to a reference voltage and then using an error amplifier to adjust the voltage to the required level. It takes the output voltage and compares it to the internal reference voltage using an internal error amplifier. As shown in the figure below, the output can be adjusted by adjusting the feedback resistor and the bias resistor. The voltage difference between the reference voltage and the feedback voltage generates a current which is sent to the error amplifier. The error amplifier then adjusts the current to the output driver which increases or decrease the output voltage to match the reference voltage.

The ADM7172ACPZ-1.8-R7 is an excellent example of this type of Linear Voltage Regulator, with a low-drop-out voltage and low quiescent current, which makes it ideal for a wide range of applications. It employs the basic operating principle of adjusting its output voltage to match a reference voltage using an internal error amplifier and can be easily adjusted using two external resistors.
