PMIC – Supervisors are a subclass of Power Management Integrated Circuit (PMIC) devices that monitor the voltage of other circuits and assert signals to reset and control one or across multiple devices. These devices, also referred to as system supervisors, provide protection circuits that protect the designs in the event of a system fault or if the voltage on a power rail, which is supplying the board, goes out of range. ADM809SAKSZ-REEL is one system supervisor specifically designed to protect microcontrollers (MCUs), FPGAs, microprocessor systems, and other digital logic ICs from harmful voltage, current, and temperature conditions.

ADM809SAKSZ-REEL is designed for protection against the following applications: Overcurrent, Overvoltage, Undervoltage, Temperature and Brown Out. It has two independent channels with two enable pins and two output pins. The enable pins can be connected to a dedicated enable signal or to the output pin of the first channel to provide a cascade operation. The output pins are open-drain MOSFETs that can drive either active-high or active-low systems. The SUPERVISOR ICs also include a low-dropout (LDO) voltage regulator that can generate a precise voltage output to the load.

ADM809SAKSZ-REEL has a voltage supervisor switch which is a resistor divider where the output of the divider pin is compared against an internal voltage reference. When the voltage on the divider pin is above the internal reference, the supervisor switch will turn off, thereby disabling the output and resetting the device being monitored. When the voltage on the divider pin is below the internal reference, the supervisor switch will turn on, thus enabling the output and restarting the device being monitored. The resistor divider can be customized to match the required input voltage with a maximum voltage of 25V and minimum voltage of 4.90V. The minimum trip point can be set from 0.90V to 4.50V.

The ADM809SAKSZ-REEL uses a three-pin temperature monitor to detect the temperature inside a system. The pin is designed to operate with a thermistor or an NTC temperature sensor. The temperature range can be set to between -40°C and +125°C with a programmable temperature hysteresis of up to 8°C. The output pin can be connected to the MCU or FPGA to indicate temperature alarms or reset the system.

The ADM809SAKSZ-REEL is also equipped with an overcurrent monitor that is used to detect and protect against current overloads within a system. The overcurrent protection threshold can be set to detect currents ranging from 0.5A to 5A. The output of the overcurrent supervisor is also connected to the MCU or FPGA to indicate overcurrent alarms or reset the system.

With its versatile protection circuits, the ADM809SAKSZ-REEL can protect a system from dangerous voltage, current and temperature conditions. By setting the required trip points, the supervisor can seamlessly protect the system from any issues arising from the power rail and temperature.
