The ADP1720-3.3-EVALZ is an evaluation board for a low-dropout, low-noise linear voltage regulator designed to provide single-supply, low-dropout regulated 3.3V output from a wide input voltage (up to 28V). The board uses the National Semiconductor ADP1720 low drop-out regulator (LDO), capable of delivering up to 1.2A output current from input voltage up to 28V. The ADP1720-3.3-EVALZ evaluation board comes with several protections to ensure safe operation including overvoltage protection, over current protection, soft start, thermal shutdown and high surge rated transient overvoltage protection. The onboard control loops make the ADP1720-3.3-EVALZ an ideal choice for automotive, medical and industrial applications.
In addition, the ADP1720-3.3-EVALZ can be used as a general purpose power supply for single-supply dc-dc converter applications, allowing a wide input voltage range of up to 28V. It can also be used to power sensitive loads, such as those associated with sensitive data processing, via the use of a combination of input voltage transformation, filtration and regulation for noise-free output current. The working principle behind the ADP1720-3.3-EVALZ involve the following steps:
- The first step involves the input voltage transformation and filtration, which stabilizes the supply voltage to the output.

The first stage involves the setting of the desired voltage output internal using a reference voltage and an external resistor divider, while in the second stage, the internal operational amplifier is used to control current from the output and match the output voltage to the reference voltage.
