ADP2381R7 voltage regulator is a synchronous monolithic buck power switch, capable of delivering up to 6 A output current. It is a member of the ADP2381 family of synchronous monolithic buck microchip switches. This voltage regulator is designed for use in a wide range of applications, from microprocessors, FPGAs and DSPs to secondary power sources in telecom, automotive and other power applications.
The ADP2381 provides a variety of features that are beneficial in a wide range of applications, including two independent internal voltage regulators, a high efficiency synchronous buck PWM controller, programmable output switching frequency and on-chip compensation for improved transient response. It also features an adjustable output voltage between 0.7V and 6V, making it suitable for a variety of buck or current-limiting applications. The ADP2381 also supports a wide range of input voltages from 3V to 26V, and can be used in an Active ORing and Dual Mode operation through the use of its LDO pins.
The ADP2381R7 is capable of providing up to 6 µA of output current at 2.5 MHz, ensuring higher efficiency than conventional isolated buck controllers and eliminating the need for a separate DC-DC controller.
The working principle of the ADP2381 is based on a buck converter topology. This type of converter consists of an inductor, two bi-directional switches, a diode and a capacitor connected in a closed loop circuit. When the switches are closed, the inductor stores energy in the form of a magnetic field. When the switches are opened, the stored energy is released and a voltage drop may be observed across the inductor. The rectifier diode prevents the current from flowing back into the circuit.
When the switches are open, the discharge capacitor provides the load current. The output voltage of the converter is then regulated by a pulse width modulated (PWM) signal generated by the controller, depending on the voltage at the output. The converter operates in continuous conduction mode by activating, deactivating and alternately activating the switches, thus allowing it to operate at high efficiency at all duty cycles.
The ADP2381R7 has an integrated high-efficiency synchronous buck PWM controller which provides a fixed output voltage between 0.7V and 6V, with an adjustable current limit. The current limit is set by sensing the output voltage and then adjusting the PWM duty cycle to maintain the desired output voltage. The output voltage is adjustable between 0.7V and 6V depending on the current limit setting.
The ADP2381R7 also features a wide input voltage range of 3 to 26V, making it suitable for a variety of applications. It features two independent voltage regulator pins, for compatibility with all types of load circuits. The device has a low standby current of 6 μA, enabling a very low power consumption even when the load is in the low current state.
The device also features a low jitter spread spectrum modulating technique and a soft-start burst mode operation, to maintain constant noise levels and reduce the output voltage transients. With a wide switching frequency range of 800 kHz to 2.5 MHz, the device can provide an optimal power solution for different applications.
The ADP2381R7 is a versatile voltage regulator and has a wide range of applications, including microprocessors, FPGAs, DSPs and other power applications such as telecom, automotive and industrial power applications.
