Data Acquisition - Analog Front End (AFE) is the hardware solution for analog signal acquisition, conditioning, and processing. The ADS1296IPAG is a data acquisition and signal conditioning front end device designed for medical devices. It is based on an innovative architecture featuring an integrated three-channel analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and dedicated analog front-end circuits for preamplification, gain selection, offset correction, and programmable filtering and signal conditioning. The chip is also designed for critical applications, such as electrocardiogram (ECG) preamplifiers and transducers, as it offers low power consumption, low noise levels, and programmable gain.

The ADS1296IPAG is based on a multi-channel ADC that contains a high resolution Delta-Sigma converter, the ADS1296, and programmable gain amplifiers, the ADS1297P. Both chips are based on CMOS (Complimentary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor) technology, with the ADS1297P providing the required amplification for the signal. The output signal from the ADC is given out in a selectable format at each of the four outputs. The ADS1296IPAG is also capable of signal input from an external signal source, using either a uni-polar or bi-polar signal format.

The signal conditioner circuit within the ADS1296IPAG works to adjust the signal in both dynamic and static indoor/outdoor operation. Dynamic signal conditioning includes gain, offset, and noise level control. Static signal conditioning includes temperature, supply voltage, and compression compensation, measured when the signal is read. This allows maximum precision in acquisition and makes the device suitable for a wide variety of applications, including medical devices.

The ADS1296IPAG can act as either a direct analog-to-digital converter or as an analog signal conditioning front-end. In direct A/D converter mode, it is capable of digitizing up to three-phase analog signals, with a resolution of up to 24 bits. Using the on-board programmable filters and signal conditioning blocks, the ADS1296IPAG can also be used to condition input signals and provide output signals in one of several pre-defined formats. The default output format is a 16-bit twos complement format, but different formats can be programmed for particular applications.

The ADS1296IPAG can also be used as an analog signal conditioning front-end. In this architecture, incoming signals are pre-conditioned before digitization. This is done by applying one or more of several filtering methods, such as averaging, immediate integration, and peak detection. The handshaking and control logic further allows the device to operate in two modes. In the first mode, the host processor initiates data acquisition and the device responds with an interrupt when data is available. The second mode is used to acquire continuous data and can be programmed to initiate the data acquisition process at regular intervals.

The ADS1296IPAG is designed for use in a wide variety of applications and is suitable for medical, industrial, and consumer applications. Its wide range of features, low power consumption, and extremely low noise levels make it an ideal solution for medical device applications, such as ECG preamplifiers and transducers. The integrated programmable filters and signal conditioning blocks can also be used to condition signals in many industrial applications, such as HVAC, flow and process control, and environmental monitoring.
