Analog to Digital Converters (ADCs) are designs related to data acquisition and provide a conversion of an analog signal into a digital form. For example, the ADS8201IRGET is a CMOS ADC integrated circuit (IC) designed for high-speed, high-accuracy, low power intensive precision measurement applications. It is part of Analog Devices’ Power by Linear™ portfolio and comes in a leadless surface mount package.

The ADS8201IRGET features 24-bit resolution, up to 10-Million samples per second (MSPS) sampling and > 79-dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Also, it includes a low-ripple/low-noise low-dropout (LDO) regulator along with programmable over-voltage and under-voltage protection. The device is ideal for medical device, instrumentation, military communication and control, isolation and sensor interface applications.

The ADS8201IRGET is pin-compatible with HDMP-125A inter-integrated circuit (I2C) interface and is designed to provide fast and accurate data acquisition across a wide dynamic range. The ADS8201IRGET is combination of 8-channel delta-sigma (∆Σ) Analog to Digital Converters (ADC) and an advanced on-chip power-management system. These eight converters are capable of converting analog input signals into 24-bit digital values at up to 10-MSPS sampling rates.

The device converts the analog data into 24-bit digital data by processing the signal through multiple stages, starting with the input stage. The input stage includes an amplifier which amplifies the low-level signals and is followed by an antialiasing filter which removes unwanted noise from the data. After the filtering operations, the signal is processed by the Low-Noise-Amplifier (LNA) and is then passed through a track-and-hold (T/H) circuit for sampling.

Once the signal is sampled, it goes through an algorithm comprising of noise shaping components and feedback control circuit. The ADC core uses a ∆Σ modulator that converts the input signal into a corresponding 24-bit digital code. The modulator has a settling time of 1 microsecond and consumes a nominal supply current of 16mW at 10-MSPS sample rate. Furthermore, the device supports internal and external reference options, allowing the user to customize the device to suit their specific application.

The ADS8201IRGET also incorporates an on-chip, low-ripple/low-noise low-dropout (LDO) regulator. With an output voltage accuracy of 0.6%, the regulator can supply up to 600mA and maintains a low-voltage drop with programmable over-voltage and under-voltage protection. This helps to maintain a stable and reliable power supply for the entire system.
