The ADS821U is a high-speed 12-bit serial Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC). It is part of a growing family of devices being developed for the data acquisition market. It is also part of Analog Devices’ growing family of high-speed ADCs which includes the ADGE Active System™ and the ADGGE Active System. The ADS821U is a single-channel device intended for applications that require high speed signal conversion of bipolar analog signals. It features low-noise signal conversion, wide signal bandwidth and relative high accuracy.
The ADS821U is offered in a 141-pin, heat-seal hermetic LCC package. The device supports an analog input voltage range of ±5V. It has an integral sample-and-hold circuit with fast settling time and true ac/dc couplings. Digital output formats are available including 2-bit Gray Code and Standard Binary. The output of the device is latched so that the data is held during each conversion cycle.
The ADS812U uses state-of-the-art integrated circuit technology for improved linearity and low noise performance. It is built on a high-speed complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) process, using advanced design techniques. It operates with a single 5V power supply, making it ideal for applications where space and power limitations exist.
ADS821U can accept input signals ranging from DC up to the Nyquist frequency - 1⁄2 the sampling rate. An external clock can be used to provide the sampling clock, or an internal oscillator can be used. The wide dynamic range of the device enables higher resolution than available in devices using 8-bit or 10-bit architecture. The ADS821U is designed for operation in harsh environment applications, such as communications systems, medical instruments, and motor control circuits.
In terms of its working principle, the ADS821U takes the input voltage and passes it to the sample and hold circuitry. This sample and hold circuitry activates the sampling switch and allows the input voltage to pass to the sample and hold capacitor. At the same time, the internal reference voltage is compared to the input voltage and an output bit is produced according to the results. The switch is then opened and the value of the capacitor is latched. This process is repeated until the full 12-bit resolution is achieved. The AD converter then serializes the 12-bit-words and sends it to the output latch
The ADS821U is particularly well suited to ADC applications that require fast update rate and accurate linearity, including industrial process control, data acquisition, medical instruments, telemetry, and general purpose instrumentation.
