Data acquisition, also known as DAQ, is a set of technologies that are used to convert analog signals into digital information. One type of data acquisition technology utilized is Analog to Digital Converters (ADC), which have the ability to convert analog electrical signals into digital information. An example of a type of ADC device is the ADS8558IPM, which has several application fields and works based on certain principles.

ADS8558IPM is a specialized integrated circuit designed for sampling analog signals. This device follows the SAR (Successive Approximation Register) architecture, and is part of Texas Instruments’ ADS8588 series. This information is used to generate the digital output value. This process is repeated over and over until the input value is equal to the reference voltage.

The acquisition stage is the first step in the ADS8558IPM operation. During this step the reference voltage and input voltage are compared. The comparator outputs the result which determines if the input voltage is higher or lower than the reference voltage. Then the encoding stage takes place. This is where the output number is built up by a process of successive approximations. The algorithm in this stage generates the output digital code. The conversion result is finally stored in the digital output register.

In order to maintain accuracy and improve performance, the ADS8558IPM contains several calibration features and error compensation techniques. It has the ability to perform on-chip self-calibration using stored reference values. It also has a fully differential track-and-hold amplifier which helps isolate disturbances that can affect the conversion and reference voltages. Additionally, the ADS8558IPM has built-in guard channel support which prevents errors due to input channel isolation.

The ADS8558IPM is a powerful ADC device with a wide range of application fields.
