Digital Isolators

Digital Isolators are electronic isolation devices used to enable communication and data transfer between two circuits. Despite being connected through the physical layer, the digital isolator maintains electrical insulation between the circuits. This allows the isolator to reject a voltage spike from propagating and effecting other components. There are several types of digital isolators on the market today, ranging from simple Transistor-Transistor Logic (TTL) to advanced integrated circuits.

ADUM4154BRIZ-RL Application Field and Working Principle

The ADUM4154BRIZ-RL is a quad dual-channel isolated RS-485 transceiver from Analog Devices’ iCoupler family. It utilizes proprietary chip-scale technology to couple the input voltage signals that bridge between the two isolated circuits. Compared to other forms of digital insolation technology, iCoupler technology is smaller in physical size and has a much faster response time. It also works well in smaller areas where other isolators are not suitable.

The ADUM4154BRIZ-RL is suitable for most applications that require isolators with multiple channels. It features four channels of isolated data transmission and reception at speeds up to 10 Mbps with up to 1500Vrms of common mode transient voltage protection. It is also compatible with both FULL-duplex and HALF-duplex communication protocols. The RS-485 transceiver offers high immunity to line noise and electrostatic discharge (ESD) with its integrated ESD protection.

The working principle of the ADUM4154BRIZ-RL is based on an iCoupler, an interface on the chip that couples the input signal from one circuit to the output of the other. It uses low-power LED source and photo-detector for data transfer between the transmitting and receiving circuits. The RS-485 transceiver takes advantage of transceivers’ capability to receive and transmit data simultaneously without any interference from the transmitted signal.

ADUM4154BRIZ-RL also supports two different levels of power saving that allows the device to remain in a low power state when idle. With its features such as low power consumption and fast response time, the ADUM4154BRIZ-RL can be used in various application fields, such as industrial controls, communication systems, building control systems, and medical diagnostic devices.
