Digital isolators are used to electrically isolate current or voltage signals between two domains, like opposite sides of a circuit board, different ground levels, or different power supplies. ADUM4401CRIZ-RL is a type of digital isolator featuring low-voltage differential signaling (LVDS) technology, which allows for like small form factor and high data traffic rate, as well as improved level-crossing performance and low-power operation.

Application Field

The ADUM4401CRIZ-RL provides a reliable solution for applications with excessive electrical noise or isolated sensitive signals and preventing ground loops when power supplies and ground levels are different. As the LVDS provides better signal-to-noise ratio and stabilized performance with longer distance than other traditional digital isolators, the ADUM4401CRIZ-RL is widely used in various industrial and automotive communication applications, like mechatronic systems, SSD controllers and infotainment systems.

Working Principle

The ADUM4401CRIZ-RL digital isolator consists of an analogue transformer coupled with a dual-channel adjustable gain amplifier, and an integrated signal conversion and transmission circuit. An analogue transformer is used to separate the two side of the application. The two sides of the transformer act independently from each other. The primary side of the transformer receives data from the transmitting side, and the secondary side of the transformer sends the data to the receiving-side. The output of the primary side is connected to the input of one of the dual-channel adjustable gain amplifier, and the other adjustable gain amplifier is connected to the output of the secondary side of the transformer. Then, the dual-channel adjustable gain amplifier amplifies the input signals and transmits them back into the transformer, and the received signals are transmitted through the secondary side of the transformer.

The output of the primary side of the isolator is also connected to an integrated signal conversion and transmission module, which performs voltage-to-current conversion. The integrated signal conversion and transmission module can convert the input voltage signal into a current signal, and then transmit it to the other side of the isolator. The receiving side will convert the current signal back into a voltage signal. In this way, the original data can be transmitted between the two sides without interference. The working voltage of ADUM4401CRIZ-RL ranges from 2.7V to 3.6V and it can work at data rates up to 6.2Mbps. The maximum isolation voltage is 15kVrms and the maximum channel-to-channel isolation is 11kVrms.

ADUM4401CRIZ-RL digital isolator is also integrated with ESD, EMC and EFT protections for better reliability and robustness. The ESD protection ensures that the isolator can handle high electrostatic discharge currents without damage. The EMC protection ensures that it can withstand strong electromagnetic interference so that the data can be successfully transmitted across the isolator. The EFT protection ensures that the isolator can withstand transient voltage and transient current.
