AEDT-9340-J00 encoders are optical incremental encoders, measuring linear or rotary displacement and converting them into digital signals. This type of encoder features an anodized aluminum profile, an infrared LED source, and two optical photointerrupters. The LED emits infrared light towards a slotted disk affixed to the shaft. As the shaft rotates, the light passes through alternating slots and the photointerrupters. Each slot causes the associated photointerrupter to generate a pulse of a logically opposite state i.e. LOW-HIGH-LOW-HIGH sequence.

This type of encoder is available in two interface types, a quadrature output or an open collector output. The quadrature output provided provides two digital phases for tracking position and direction. The open collector output design generates two outputs A B which pulse HIGH when the corresponding slot appears in the pattern, and LOW in all other circumstances. Quadrature encoders are the most common type used in most motion control applications.
