RF Accessories: AFB Application Field and Working Principle
RF Accessories are components that help regulate the flow of radio frequency (RF) signals from one point to another. Among these is the Automatic gain control (AGC) field effect transistors (FET) or AFB (Acoustic Field Balancing) devices. AFB is a type of transistor-based amplifier used in RF circuits and as such, it can be specified for nearly any application that requires its particular characteristics.The AFB device is a field-effect transistor-based amplifier with a gain that is automatically adjusted on the basis of the input signal levels. In a nutshell, it balances the output level with the input signal level, thus providing the ability to accurately regulate the output power for a given signal. This makes it ideal for applications where high linearity and power stability are desired. Typical examples include RF amplification in radios, satellite dishes, and digital TV systems.At its core, the AFB amplifier is composed of a common gate transistor and two real components (aka feedback loop), as shown in Figure 1 below. The lower transistor in Figure 1 acts as the gain control element and pairs with the upper transistor in such a way that the net gain of the Q0-Q1 pair depends on the amplitude of the signal input. To modify the gain, the amplitude of the input needs to be adjusted.The response of the upper transistor in Figure 1 to changing input signal levels is extremely fast, so it can react quickly to changing signal levels while still preserving accuracy. This gives the AFB the ability to perform well in high-speed and critical tuning applications. Moreover, by adjusting both the feedback loop and the gain control element, the gain of the amplifier can be subjected to a variety of frequency or power conditioning algorithms, allowing it to be adapted to any particular application.Not only can AFB devices be tuned to specific applications, they also provide the added benefit of improved power efficiency. As the gain increases, so does the supply voltage requirement. The feedback loop helps to regulate this voltage and can provide a significant improvement in the overall efficiency of the amplifier.Finally, another advantage of the AFB transistor is that it is relatively small in size, making it suitable for integration into a number of different products. That said, it’s important to note that this type of amplifier does not radiate any energy, meaning that it needs to be shielded from any sources of background radiation to ensure optimal performance.It is clear why AFB devices are used in RF systems on a regular basis. Their fast response time, improved power efficiency, and small size are all key factors in why they continue to be leveraged in today’s increasingly digital world.
