A 3-axis accelerometer is a device used to measure the acceleration of an object in three dimensions along the X, Y, and Z axes. The AGS21351 is a low-cost 3-axis accelerometer module capable of measuring up to ±32 g of acceleration in all three axes. It is an ideal module for activities that require detection of acceleration, velocity or tilt.

Application Field

The AGS21351 3-axis accelerometer has a wide range of applications in many industries, such as automotive, consumer goods, and defense. In the automotive industry, this device is used in the development of products that require detection and feedback of vehicle acceleration, like traction control or crash detection systems. In consumer goods, it has many applications, such as in gaming consoles such as the Nintendo Wii or the PlayStation 3. It is also used in smartphones to detect tilting for gaming. In the defense sector, this module can be used in the development of weapon navigation systems and hand-held motion sensors.

Working Principle

The working principle of the AGS21351 3-axis accelerometer is based on the piezoresistive effect. Piezoresistive effect is the decrease in the electrical resistance of a material when it is subjected to mechanical strain. This device features three piezoresistor elements, one on each axis, with a Wheatstone bridge configuration. When the accelerometer is subjected to acceleration along any of its axes, the strain induces mechanical stress on the piezoresistor elements, causing a change in the resistance. This change in resistance in each of the three axes is detected by the sensor and is used to generate an output signal proportional to the acceleration along each axis.

The output signal from the AGS21351 can be configured in voltage mode or current mode for each of the three axes. The voltage output mode provides a linear output voltage with a gain of 6 mV/g and a full-scale range of ±32 g. The current output mode provides an output current with a gain of 5 μA/g and a full-scale range of ±32 g. The device operates with a supply voltage of 3.0–5.5 V and has a low current consumption of 2.5 μA.

The AGS21351 3-axis accelerometer module is an extremely versatile device suitable for many applications that require detection and feedback of vehicle acceleration, as well as tilt applications in consumer goods, such as gaming consoles or smartphones. Its low cost, small size, and low current consumption make it an ideal choice for a variety of applications.
