Motion Sensors - IMUs (Inertial Measurement Units)IMUs, or Inertial Measurement Units, are a type of motion sensors that measure the motion of a body using accelerometry, gyroscopy, and magnetometry. AHRS380ZA-200 is one such IMU. It is a micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) sensor which measures six degrees of freedom (6DOF) motion, such as the roll, pitch, and yaw.The AHRS380ZA-200 is used in applications such as robotic control, guidance for drones, and navigation for mobile devices and robots. This array of sensors enables reliable attenuation in the presence of dynamic motion and vibration while providing a wide dynamic range of motion detection.The AHRS380ZA-200 is composed of three key components that work together to measure motion. It is built with a 3-axis accelerometer, a 3-axis gyroscope, and a 3-axis magnetometer. The accelerometer provides measurements of linear acceleration in the x, y, and z directions. The gyroscope senses angular rates in the x, y, and z axes, and the magnetometer provides information on direction, using the Earth’s magnetic field.The AHRS380ZA-200 operates in three modes: active, low-power, and conditioning. The active mode is used when the IMU is in motion and provides the maximum sample rate of 500 Hz. The low-power mode is used when the IMU is stationary and it has a sample rate of 6 Hz. The conditioning mode is used as an additional filter for the accelerometer, with a sample rate of 25 Hz when the IMU is in motion.Once assembled, the AHRS380ZA-200 is calibrated to determine offsets for the sensor bias of each sensor. This calibration is necessary to get accurate motion measurements from the IMU. The offsets are presumed to be constant and can often be found by running the calibration routine multiple times and averaging out the offsets.The AHRS380ZA-200 is also able to make compensations for motion artifacts, such as gravity, accelerations, and magnetism. The accelerometer can be used to measure acceleration and gravity, decreasing the errors caused by these factors. The gyroscope is used to measure angular motion, thus correcting the bias caused by the accelerometer’s measurement errors. Finally, the magnetometer is used to measure the Earth’s magnetic field and provide additional corrections.The AHRS380ZA-200 is a powerful and reliable motion detection and tracking system. It is composed of three MEMS sensors which measure linear acceleration, angular rates, and geomagnetic fields.
