Transient Voltage Suppression (TVS) Diodes provide excellent protection from damaging over-voltages caused by indirect lightning strikes, electrical over-stresses, and electrostatic discharges (ESDs). These devices are designed to work where short circuit, high-power dissipation and avalanche capability are required and are commonly used in telecommunication, computer and industrial electronic applications.The AK6-066C-12 is a typical TVS diode designed for short circuit protection of low voltage reinforced communication lines. It is a pre-assembled TVS diode, mounted in a DO-213AB package, intended for use in direct connection to the power line. This type of diode is typically used in power supply, data communications and industrial applications, due to its ability to provide fast and efficient protection from spikes and surges.The AK6-066C-12 is designed to address protection applications with various requirements, including low capacitance, low reverse leakage current and outstanding clamping performance. It is able to provide low capacitance performance when its Reverse Standoff Voltage (RSOV) is lower than the applied voltage. The high surge capability of this device is able to dissipate up to 1200W of energy in 10/1000μs, without damaging the connected equipment. The breakdown voltage is also adjustable, allowing it to be tailored for various application specific requirements.The working principle of the AK6-066C-12 is based on the avalanche breakdown effect, where a reverse biased PN junction is exposed to an excessive amount of voltage, which causes the field in the depletion region to become greater than the breakdown value. This results in a large amount of current that quickly damages the device, but provides protection to the connected equipment.When the device is powered off, the reverse leakage current is close to zero - providing a lack of power loss - and the RSOV is adjustable between 0.6V to 6V, ensuring a fast and reliable protection for any voltage transient in the target application.In addition, the AK6-066C-12 device is designed to withstand ESD pulses up to 17kV (contact discharge, HD), 10kV (human body model) and 8kV (charged device model), providing maximum robustness against potential ESD-induced damage.The AK6-066C-12 is an ideal solution for applications that require a reliable protection from voltage transients caused by ESD and indirect lightning strikes. It provides both high surge capability and adjustable breakdown voltage, which makes it an excellent choice for a variety of applications.
