Data Acquisition – Analog to Digital Converters (ADC)Analog to Digital Converters (ADC) are devices that convert analog signals, such as voltage levels, temperature readings, and pressure readings, into a digital representation. An application field for this type of technology is the AMC1203BDW.The AMC1203BDW is a low noise, 18 bit, differential, monolithic analog to digital converter (ADC) designed for the conversion of high-accuracy signals from sensor signals, such as load cells and strain gauges, to digital data. It has an innovative architecture, which allows it to achieve more accuracy and resolution in a smaller and more power-efficient form factor than other converters in its class. The underlying design philosophy of the AMC1203BDW is to provide a reliable, low noise, high performance, robust product that is easy to implement and program. The AMC1203BDW is an ideal solution for applications that require high-accuracy data conversion, such as weighing systems, pressure and temperature measurement, instrumentation and control systems, and some image processing systems. The device is highly configurable, with options to choose a range of voltage reference options, a selection of output resolution, and the ability to select either a single-ended or differential input mode. The versatility and performance of the device makes it suitable for applications where accuracy and reliability are of great importance. The working of the AMC1203BDW is based on successive approximation process. It has five stages, beginning with the analog input signal conditioning, followed by sampling, A/D conversion, signal conditioning, and coding. In this process, the incoming voltage at the input is monitored by the A/D converter and compared to a successive approximation of the analog signal. When the difference between the two is deemed to be within a certain tolerance level, the conversion is said to be finished and the output is then encoded in the desired digital format. The output of the A/D conversion is then ready to be used by a processing system.The ADC offers a full 18-bit resolution and has a dynamic range of -2LSB to (2^18-1)/(2^17-1) Vpp, where 2^17-1 corresponds to the full-scale input of the device. The dynamic range is greater than most other devices in its class. The ADC is also equipped with a digital signal conditioner (DSC) to reduce noise, providing a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 85dB for signals between 1 kHz to 10 kHz. In short, the AMC1203BDW is a high-precision, low-noise, 18-bit accuracy, single-chip differential analog to digital converter, with enhanced signal conditioning capabilities. The device is fast, highly programmable and has a robust architecture which makes it suitable for a wide range of demanding applications. Its low power consumption makes it an attractive choice for a variety of applications. The device is available in two packages: a mini-SOP form factor and an SSOP form factor.
