4. Function Description

1. H-bridge driver

Each of the two stators incorporates a complete H-bridge winding. Each H-bridge is switched by two low-side and two high-side N-type MOSFETs. Writing logic '0' to bit <MOTEN> disables all drivers (high impedance). Writing a logic '1' to this bit simultaneously enables the bridge and current can flow into the motor stator windings. To avoid large currents through the H-bridge switches, ensure that the top and bottom switches of the same half-bridge are never conducting at the same time (interlock delay). Two-stage protection for motor line short circuit is implemented. In the first stage, the current in the driver is limited. Secondly, when it is detected that the voltage at both ends is too high, the triode will cut off. To reduce radiated/conducted emissions, voltage slope control is implemented in the output switch. The output slope is defined by the gate-to-drain capacitance of the output transistor and the driven (limited) current gate. There are two trim bits for slope control. Power transistors are equipped with so-called "active diodes": when current is forced through the transistor switch in the opposite direction, i.e. from source to drain, the transistor turns on. This ensures that most of the current flows through the channel of the transistor rather than through the inherent parasitic drain body diode of the transistor.

2. PWM current control

The PWM comparator continuously compares the actual winding current to the demanded current and feeds the information back to the digital regulation loop. This loop then generates a PWM signal that turns on/off the H-bridge switch. The switching points of the PWM duty cycle are synchronized to the on-chip PWM clock. The frequency of the PWM controller can be doubled and artificial dithering can be added. PWM frequency does not vary with supply voltage. Also changes in motor speed or motor load conditions have no effect. There are no external components required to adjust the PWM frequency.
