Motion Sensors - Optical
Optical motion sensors measure motion by detecting changes in the image projected on the detector element. The AMN21112 is a solid-state, infrared motion sensor consisting of a non-contact infrared sensor with built-in signal conditioning electronics.
The AMN21112 is an all-in-one motion detector device packaged in a miniature TO-92 can housing. It incorporates a single photodiode, serving as the detector element, and a fixed-slope integrated signal conditioning circuit, and is designed to replace traditional motion sensors that use complex control circuit. Its novel design is based on a non-contact radiation sensor which minimizes false alarm signals and improves detection reliability.
Some of the features that make the AMN21112 an ideal choice for applications requiring motion sensing include its low power consumption, low cost, small size, high reliability, and its ability to detect very small motions or changes in direction. One of the key advantages of this type of motion sensor is the ability to sense motion with minimum effect on the environment. In terms of performance, the AMN21112 is sensitive over a large range of speeds from low vibration to higher motion speeds. The working principle of the AMN21112 is based on the effect of infrared radiation on a photodiode. When infrared radiation impacts the active area of a photodiode, generated electrons-hole pairs drop in voltage and an electrical signal is generated. The voltage generated by the sensor is proportional to the amount of infrared radiation that falls on the active area. The amplitude and phase of the voltage generated depend exclusively upon the amount of infrared radiation on the photodiode and the design of the integrated analog signal conditioning circuit.
The presence of motion is detected by measuring the levels of infrared radiation that fall on the active area. When motion is detected, the integrated signal conditioning circuit will adjust the output voltage accordingly. The output voltage is determined by the amount of infrared radiation measured at a fixed frequency. The frequency is adjustable via the integrated potentiometer, thus allowing for a more sensitive response at a given frequency.
The AMN21112 is a convenient and effective motion sensing device, thanks to its low cost, small size, and low power consumption. Its non-contact design ensures a high sensitivity and reliability. The device is suitable for all types of motion sensing applications, from security systems to environmental monitoring.
