Working Principle

The AN15852A-VT generates the signals necessary to control the current of a stepping motor by comparing the feedback signal from a Hall IC or resolver IC to a reference signal from an internal reference signal generator. This comparison is then used to control the high side MOSFET. The IC features a low-current operation of about 1mA and speed 720 steps per second for the pulse input control method, and speed up to 400 steps per second for the resolver control method.

The AN15852A-VT uses the Pulse/DIR signal inputs to control the direction and speed of a motor. The IC consists of an error amplifier, current comparator, pulse generator, voltage limiter, power MOSFET gate drivers, and MOSFET devices. When the pulse signal is input, the current comparator compares the feedback signal with the reference signal and the resulting difference is amplified in the error amplifier. The output of the error amplifier is then used to control the gate voltage of the power MOSFETs.

The output of the comparator is also used to generate pulses, which produces pulses for the stepping motor in a frequency-based manner. The pulse is used to control the direction of the coil and rotate the motor in the desired direction. An external protection circuit is used to protect the device from external short circuits and over-current faults coming from the motor.

In addition, to ensure the thermal protection of the AN15852A-VT, an internal thermal protection circuit monitors the temperature of the internal power MOSFETs, and deactivates the device when the temperature reaches a certain predetermined threshold. When the temperature of the AN15852A-VT goes below this value, the device is then reactivated.
