Optical sensors including ambient light sensors, infrared sensors and ultraviolet sensors are used to detect external environmental parameters. Generally, these sensors will convert light signals into electrical signals, which can be detected and analyzed by electronic circuits. One of the popularly-used optical sensors is APDS-9006-020. This article will explain its application field and working principle.
APDS-9006-020 is a few specialist optical sensor for specific applications such as digital devices (e.g. cellular phone, notebook, PDA) and ambient light sensing solutions. It integrates infrared LED, wide dynamic range and highly-sensitive photodiode, provides wide response spectrum, low noise operation and high resolution. The sensor can integrate up to three separate light sensing elements: IR LED, blue LED and photodiode, and it has a built-in high-speed signal process and software functions.
The application field of APDS-9006-020 mainly applies to digital devices (such as cellular phones, notebook, and PDA). For digital devices, environment light might interfere the operation of the media device, and that\'s why an optical sensor is basically needed. It will detect differential light when the device is coved or inserted into other cases. Moreover, for many operating modes (such as scroll, zoom, and other navigation based functions) of digital devices, ambient light sensing sensor is also necessary to make sure that whether the device can enter into the correct mode or not.
Additionally, APDS-9006-020 is also designed to act as a basic ambient light sensor. In most cases, the application will consist of a simple light-proof housing and lid assembly that houses two separate modules. The first module is the actual light sensor, usually in the form of a photodiode, which is connected to the other module. This second module contains the electronics, usually in the form of a microcontroller, required to amplify, process and interpret the signals from the light sensor. In this arrangement, only light with a wavelength that passes through a protective window can cause an output signal.
The working principle of APDS-9006-020 is based on its construction. This type of optical sensor has two basic components, the light emitter and the sensor. The light emitter is usually an LED or similar that will emit light of a specific wavelength, usually infrared or visible light. Upon connecting the emitter to a power source, such as a battery or a controller, it will emit light in a given direction. On the other side of the sensor is the light sensor. This device is capable of detecting light that is emitted from the LED or similar light emitter.
When the LED emitter is on and the light sensor is exposed to the LED’s light, a current will be generated in the light sensor and it will be detected by the associated electronics. The voltage of the current will be proportional to the intensity of the light that is falling on it. The circuit will then convert this voltage to a digital form and output it as an output signal.
APDS-9006-020 is a combined sensor, which is suitable for applications like digital devices (such as cellular phones, notebook, and PDA). Its application field mainly consists of three functions: detecting environment light, entering into proper operating mode, and providing a basic ambient light sensing. The working principle of the sensor is based on its construction, which contains a light emitter and a light sensor. The light emitter will generate light and the light sensor will convert the light signal to electrical signals so that the voltage can be detected and analyzed.
