Optical Sensors - Ambient Light, IR, UV Sensors
The APDS-9200 Proximity and Ambient Light Sensor is an integrated single chip device used for monitoring both ambient light intensity and the presence of an object in proximity applications. It is designed for use in a variety of applications including industrial and consumer electronics, instrumentation, medical, gaming, smart phones, tablets, and personal computers. The device uses an infrared LED and pinhole photodetector to detect the presence of objects in its vicinity, and its ambient light sensing capabilities allow it to be used as a standalone ambient light sensor.Features
The APDS-9200 features integrated IR LEDs and photodetectors, as well as 12-bit ambient light sensing capability. It is capable of detecting objects in its vicinity and is also capable of sensing ambient light intensity levels. To give the user greater flexibility and functionality, the APDS-9200 Proximity and Ambient Light Sensor also includes a sleep-mode feature which allows the user to conserve power while still being able to detect objects. The device also has different I/O options include an I2C interface to enable a great degree of control from the host processor as well as a stand-alone analog-to-digital converter (ADC) output. Additionally, the APDS-9200 features an impressive operating temperature range from –40°C to 85°C and is small in form factor.Applications
Due to its impressive feature set, the APDS-9200 is well suited for use in a variety of mobile and consumer electronics applications. It can be used in proximity detection applications such as finding objects in the dark and tracking objects. Additionally, its ambient light sensing capabilities make it ideal for use in automatic brightness controls for displays, digital cameras, or portable devices. The device is also a great choice for use in light switch-based lighting control systems.Working Principle
The APDS-9200 uses an infrared LED and a pinhole photodetector to detect the presence of nearby objects. When an object is present, the device will detect the amount of light reflected by the object and convert this signal into an electrical signal. The electrical signal is then used by the device’s embedded processor to determine if the object is present and to determine its proximity. The device also uses its built-in ambient light sensing circuitry to detect the amount of ambient light in the area. This signal is then converted into an electrical signal, and this can be used by the processor to determine the ambient light level. The processor then uses this data to determine if the ambient light level is within an acceptable range, and also to adjust the device’s output accordingly. Finally, the device’s I/O options can be used to output data to a host processor for further analysis and control. The specific data is subject to PDF, and the above content is for reference
