Description
The APDS-9300 is a low-voltage Digital Ambient Light Photo Sensor that converts light intensity to digital signal output capable of directI2C interface. Each device consists of one broadband photodiode (visible plus infrared) and one infrared photodiode. Two integrating ADCs convert thephotodiode currentsto adigital outputthatrepresents the irradiance measured on each channel. This digital output can be input to a microprocessor where illuminance (ambient light level) in lux is derived using an empirical formula to approximate the human-eye response.
Features
1. Approximate the human-eye response
2. Precise Illuminance measurement under diverse lighting conditions
3. Programmable Interrupt Function with User-Defined Upper and Lower Threshold Settings
4. 16-Bit Digital Output with I2C Fast-Mode at 400 kHz
5. Programmable Analog Gain and Integration Time
6. Miniature ChipLED Package
Height - 0.55mm
Length - 2.60mm
Width - 2.20mm
7. 50/60-Hz Lighting Ripple Rejection
8. Low 2.5-V Input Voltage and 1.8-V Digital Output
9. Low Active Power (0.6 mW Typical) with Power Down Mode
10. RoHS Compliant
Pin definition (CHIPLED-6)
Pin number | Name | Function |
1 | VDD | Power supply (2.4V-3.6V) |
2 | SDA | I²C data line |
3 | SCL | I²C clock line |
4 | INT | Interrupt output (open drain) |
5 | GND | Ground |
6 | NC | Null pin |
Typical application circuit
Smartphone backlight control:
VDD ─── 3.3V (0.1μF capacitor in parallel)
SDA ── MCU's I²C data line (pull up 4.7kΩ)
SCL ── MCU's I²C clock line (pull up 4.7kΩ)
INT ── MCU interrupt pin (for brightness mutation detection)
Applications
1. Detection of ambient light to control display backlighting
- Mobile devices – Cell phones, PDAs, PMP
- Computing devices – Notebooks, Tablet PC, Key board
- Consumer devices – LCD Monitor, Flat-panel TVs, Video Cameras, Digital Still Camera
2. Automatic Residential and Commercial Lighting Management
3. Automotive instrumentation clusters.
4. Electronic Signs and Signals
Design considerations
1. Optical layout:
- Avoid stains blocking the light-sensitive window
- Recommended light-transmitting hole design of more than 2mm
2. Signal integrity:
- I²C trace length <30cm
- Avoid parallel traces with high-frequency signals
