APS11205LLHALX Application Field and Working Principle

APS11205LLHALX is one of the magnetic sensors from Switches (Solid State) category. Magnetic sensors are used for conducting the detection of magnetic field strengths. Do they detect the presence of relatively weak magnetic field produced by permanent magnets or ferromagnetic materials or they can also measure the actual field strength. Magnetic sensors contain either reed switches or the solid-state Hall effect sensor. As a stackable Hall effect device, APS11205LLHALX is a “System in Package” version of the APS112 IC, which provides a low-cost magnetic sensing solution to customers. It can precisely detect the sensed magnetic field from a ring magnet or a ferromagnetic element and immediately report it to the processor.

Working Principle

Hall effect devices operate based on the Hall effect principle, which is the phenomenon of a voltage difference when a current is flowing through a conductor in the presence of a magnetic field. When a magnetic field passes through an IC chip made from a semiconductor material (e.g. silicon), the IC chip would produce a voltage between its output leg and its ground that is proportional to the magnetic field strength. This IC chip is then interpreted by the processor as a magnetic field passing through it and the positive/negative output voltage is used to define the field polarity.

APS11205LLHALX contains a Hall effect sensor, which can accurately detect a magnetic field. By applying a magnetic field to the device, the magnetic field will induce a current in the Hall effect sensor, which will then be processed by an internal comparator. The internal comparator will detect the saturation of the current and then produce an output voltage based on the polarity of the magnetic field. The output voltage of the device can be used to identify the position of the permanent magnets.
