ARE13A12Z application field and working principle

High Frequency (RF) Relays are used in various applications that require switches to be activated and deactivated at the coaxial cable frequency range. This includes TV, radio, antireflective attenuator, satellite communications, wireless systems, and many other systems. ARE13A12Z is a single pole, double throw relay available in the Theta-Zeus range of RF relays. It has high isolation, very low insertion loss and a wide range of frequency isolation.

A high frequency (RF) relay is a device that provides a connection between two or more electronic components when activated. Unlike mechanical switches, RF relays do not require any contact in order to close the connection, instead relying on electromagnetic induction to activate the switch. This means they are able to switch faster than traditional mechanical switches, making them suitable for high frequency applications. The ARE13A12Z uses two actuators to achieve this, one for C-relay (control) and another for S-relay (signal) contacts.

The S-relay contact on the ARE13A12Z is used to connect and disconnect the contacts of the two electronic devices. This is done by the S-relay coil which is wrapped around a ferrite core. When a low frequency signal is applied to the coil it produces an oscillating electromagnetic field which fluxes the ferrite core, causing it to become polarized. When the ferrite core is polarized, it causes the contacts of the S-relay switch to close, forming an electric connection between the two electronic components.

The C-relay contact is used to activate and deactivate the S-relay contact. This is accomplished by the C-relay coil which is wrapped around a different ferrite core. When a high frequency signal (up to 250MHz) is applied to the C-relay coil it creates an oscillating magnetic field which fluxes the ferrite core, causing it to become polarized. When the ferrite core is polarized, it causes the contacts of the C-relay switch to close, activating the S-relay contact and forming an electric connection between the two electronic components.

The ARE13A12Z is designed to provide high isolation between the two electronic components. The S-relay contact has a wide frequency range isolation of 25kHz to 2GHz. The C-relay contact has an isolation of up to 250MHz. The high isolation of the ARE13A12Z enables it to switch two very different systems such as digital and analog signals without any degradation of signal quality.
