Magnetic sensors refer to the type of sensors that detects, measures, and responds to changes in a magnetic field. Magnetic sensors can be utilized for sensing the state of any object in either a digital (on/off) or analog (variable) manner. In many applications, the sensing of magnetic fields is required for controlling processes or monitoring them.
Switches (Solid State) refer to the type of magnetic sensing technologies that utilize a digital signal output. Generally, when a magnet approaches the sensors, a logic level high signal is detected. As the magnet is moved away from the sensor, the output signal goes low. To avoid false triggering due to AC fields, these solid-state switches are often designed with a type of notch or dead-band to eliminate any AC field sensitivity. Some of these sensors also incorporate hysteresis into the design.
The AS-V20TA-R is an example of a solid-state magnetic switch from ASM Sensors. This device is well suited for direct connection to programmable logic controllers, as well as analog/digital controllers. It has a built-in quiet-zone detection feature, which reduces emissions and improves the immunity to possible interference from other magnetic fields. This sensor is designed to be used in industrial and commercial applications including position monitoring, motion detection and control, hydraulic system regulation, fluid level checking, machine safety systems, and chemical flow measurement.
The AS-V20TA-R Sensor contains a magnetically sensitive switch element, two differential Hall-Effect elements with self-viewing features, a voltage regulator, and other integrated components. It has a digital output and is able to detect the presence or absence of a magnet. Sensing is done by applying a DC voltage to the device, which creates a magnetic field around the element. When a magnet is brought close to the element, a change in the field is sensed and energy is delivered to the switching element, creating a switching signal.
The AS-V20TA-R is designed to be operated with a single 5~24 V DC power supply. It is protected against reverse polarity, transient overloads, and short-circuits, as well as offering EMC protection over a wide frequency range. It has a wide operating temperature range of -40° C to +105° C and is capable of operating at frequencies between 100 and 10000Hz. The Digital Output is an Open Collector Transistor, with a maximum voltage rating of 24V and a maximum current rating of 40mA.
